Middle East trio look for glory at ONE Friday Fights 41

The eyes of fight fans in the Middle East will be on ONE Friday Fight 41 this week – with three regional fighters taking part.
Meysam Adelniya, Morteza Noroozi and Milad Hosseini from Iran will all feature at the Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.
All three men will be making their promotional debuts with ONE Championship, at and event which will see the number-three ranked flyweight Muay Thai contender Dedduanglek Tded99 headline against Nakrob Fairtex.
Undefeated Hosseini (2-0) will be competing in the flyweight MMA division when he takes on Brazil’s Leandro Gomes. Gomes is also making his ONE debut this week, but rides a three-fight win streak and will offer a stern test to Iran’s Hosseini.
Compatriot Noroozi (2-0) will be in welterweight MMA action, when he takes on fellow undefeated fighter Gadzhimurad Amirzhanov. The Russian is 4-0 overall, and last time out won on this ONE debut in impressive fashion –  finishing Mehraban Farhadi by anaconda choke.
Adelniya takes on Parnpet Sor Jor Lekmuangnon in a 126-lbs catchweight Muay Thai contest. Despite this being his first outing in ONE, Adeimiya (15-8)  will see an opportunity to start with a win as Parnpet (70-17) looks to rebound from two straight losses with the organisation.

Algeria’s Anissa Meksen makes long awaited return at ONE Friday Fights 46

One of the world’s most feared strikers makes her return next month – and will immediately have her eyes fixed on championship gold.
French Algerian Anissa Meksen has been out of the ring for more than a year but will face Phetjeeja at ONE Friday Fights 46 on December 22 is what is expected to be an explosive showcase of striking for the ONE Interim Women’s Atomweight Kickboxing World Title.
The famed Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok will pay host to the much anticipated bout which will see both women put undefeated ONE records on the line, with Meksen currently three from three, and Phetjeeja one better with four wins from her four outings with the organisaiton.
Meksen needs no introduction on the world striking stage. The 35-year-old is a seven-time Muay Thai and Kickboxing world champion, with an incredible 103-5 overall record.
If there is one woman who will not be fazed by the challenge however, it is Phetjeeja. At just 21-years-of-age, she is a prodigy with rare talent. Despite her tender years, The Queen has amassed an almost incomprehensible record of 206-6 in Muay Thai. Her four ONE contests have all ended the same way too – by stoppage. Two first round, a second, and third round TKO have announced her presence ONE in the most dramatic fashion – but she now faces arguably her biggest test to date.
The winner will walk away with the ONE Interim Women’s Atomweight Kickboxing World Title, setting up a 2024 unification bout with current divisional queen Janet Todd.
This is a truly spectacular showdown to end 2023, and one which might well be a late entry in fight of the year conversations. It is one not to be missed.

Morocco’s Joseph Lasiri looking to end the year on on high with huge Prajanchai rematch

Nineteen months ago Joseph Lasiri shocked the world when he defeated Prajanchai for the ONE Strawweight Muay Thai World Title, now their long-awaited rematch is confirmed at ONE’s final show of 2023.
Italian Moroccan Lasiri faced a tough start to his ONE career, losing on each of his first four outings in the organisation, but rallied to secure a title shot with three impressive wins in his next four contests including the knockout of Asahi Shinagawa.
Despite that momentum he entered the ring in May 2022 a heavy underdog against Thai hero Prajanchai – but was able to pull off the performance of his life and knock the champion out in the third round.
Since that night, the two men’s careers have taken very different paths. 32-year-old Lasiri has only fought on one occasion – an unsuccessful attempt at becoming a two-weight world champion when he took on Rodtang for the featherweight crown. His November 2022  unanimous decision loss was by no means a disgrace given the level of competition, but now having been out of the ring more than a year will be a cause for concern among his supporters in the MENA region.
On the other hand Prajanchai has been doing all he can to get back to the top of the strawweight mountain. Three consecutive wins, including last time out against Algeria’s Akram Hamidi, albeit in a kickboxing bout, have him knocking on the door of the champion. A win over Sam-A Gaiyanghadao gave Prajanchai the interim title, now it is time to crown a unified strawweight division champion.
The two will now face off one again at ONE Friday Fights 46: Tawanchai vs. Superbon on December 22.
Lasiri will be keen to show his all action performance in their first bout was no fluke, with Prajanchai will be hoping that was just a bad night at the office, and his reign at the top of the super-competitive strawweight division is about to resume.

Historic night for Jonathan Haggerty and Tye Ruotolo at ONE Fight Night 16

Jonathan Haggerty is a two-sport world champion after a two-round demolition of Fabricio Andrade.
The British fighter now adds the ONE bantamweight kickboxing world title to his Muay Thai crown at the same weight to become one of the most decorated, and respected, fighters in the world of combat sports.
Going into this one it was tough to call but Andrade, the current bantamweight MMA world champion, could not live with the accuracy and volume of blows thrown by his opponent.

26-year-old Haggerty started brightly with a range of strikes with both hands and feet making his Brazilian opponent look slow and flat-footed at times. With the first round comfortably in the bag, he would pick up the pace in the second stanza, wobbling Andrade with a left high kick, before closing the distance and letting his fists fly. After a barrage of punches, a right hand fully penetrated the defences, sending Andrade to the canvas, and the referee waved it off.
Haggerty not only joined a select band of two-sport world champion, but also pocketed a $100,000 performance bonus for his work.
It was also a huge night for America’s Tye Ruotolo. He joined his twin brother Kade in becoming a ONE submission grappling world champion at the age of just 19.
In front of a packed out crowd at the Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Thailand, Ruotolo overwhelmed Dagestani opponent Magomed Abdulkadirov to claim the inaugural ONE welterweight submission grappling world champion.

It was another sparkling performance from the teenager who dominated position throughout on his way to a unanimous decision victory. Abdulkadirov wa tenacious in his defence, but wasn’t given a look-in by a prodigy of the sport who can now count himself as a history maker.
Elsewhere there were wins for Seksan Or Kwanmuang, and Sinsamut Klinmee – while Turkey’s Halil Amir scored a blistering first-round win over Pakistan’s Ahmed Mujtaba. That is now three wins in a row in ONE for Amir – who boasts an undefeated professional record of 10-0 and is rapidly increasing his credentials in the lightweight MMA division.

The fighters Arab audiences should be following at ONE Fight Night 16

If the prospect of a new two-sport champion being crowned, along with one of grappling’s biggest prospects chasing his first gold wasn’t enough, fight fans in the MENA region have extra reason to be excited.
While all eyes might be on Jonathan Haggerty and Fabricio Andrade battling for the ONE Championship bantamweight world title, and Tye Ruotolo looking to make welterweight submission grappling history – but there are some great storylines a little closer to home.
Here are two fighters on the card for fans in the region to look out for;
Karim Bennoui
At 35, Bennoui is something of a veteran of the sport with more than 20 years’ experience behind him – and 15 of those in the professional ranks. He may have been born in France, but is of Algerian descent, and is determined to make a big impact on his ONE debut this weekend.
He will take on Thai legend Seksan Or Kwanmuang. In reality this could not be a tougher debut for Bennoui, with Seksan unbeaten in ONE with a perfect 6-0 record – and a list of victims that reads like a who’s who of professional combat sport.
A tough task it is, but if Bennoui comes through it, the world could be at his feet in ONE’s Muay Thai class.
Mouhcine Chafi
Another debutant to look out for on Saturday will be Mouhcine Chafi who is Spanish of Moroccan descent.
Like Bennoui, Chafi will be experiencing a tough test when he steps in against Thailand’s Sinsamut Klinmee.
Klinmee has a fearsome record – with his only two defeats in ONE coming at the hands of two weight world champion Regian Eersel.
For 26-year-old Chafi this is an opportunity to test himself against one of the best – and put the lightweight Muay Thai division on notice if he can pull off a big win.

Why you have to watch ONE Fight Night 16: Haggerty vs Andrade main event

ONE Fight Night 16 comes our way this weekend, and the main event is a must-watch for so many reasons.
First of all when Britain’s Jonathan Haggerty and Brazil’s Fabricio Andrade meet, a two-sport world champion will be crowned.
Bantamweight Muay Thai champ Haggerty, and bantamweight MMA supremo Andrade will go head-to-head for the division’s kickboxing crown, and join a small select group who have been able to reign over two sports in ONE Championship.
Haggerty comes into the bout with an outright striking pedigree, as you’d expect from a Muay Thai master. Training in the discipline since the age of seven, he has learned and honed his craft over nearly two decades to become a member of the world’s elite – with standout ONE wins over Joseph Lasiri, Sam-A Gaiyanghadao, and Nong-O Hama – all of whom are former ONE world champions.
Fabricio Andrade wants another title
The question going into this one, will be can Andrade hang with Haggerty’s striking in a purely kickboxing contrast. We are all well aware of his MMA capabilities, and the four knockout/TKO wins he holds in ONE – but MMA striking is vastly different to purer striking disciplines like Muay Thai, and indeed kickboxing.
Take a step back into the world of Fabricio Andrade from 2016 to 2019 however and you will see a kickboxing record of 20-3 – yes, he may not have fought under those rules in the last four years but he will be more than comfortable between the ropes, rather than a cage.
Andrade will take a half-inch height advantage, but Haggerty will enjoy a little over an inch in reach advantage – both negligible at this level.
And so it will come down to the pure striker versus the striker turned MMA superstar – two phenomenal champions – one of who will leave the Lumpinee Stadium, Bangkok, a history maker and two sport king.

A Common Ground for Pakistan and India at Sharjah Cricket Stadium

Few cricket stadiums can match the legacy of Sharjah Cricket Stadium – a venue which has borne witness to some titanic displays from the sport’s greatest icons.
From Sachin Tendulkar’s breathtaking ‘Desert Storm’ performance in 1998 to Javed Miandad stunning India with a last-ball six in 1986, Sharjah Cricket Stadium has ensured it will always have a place in cricketing folklore.
The likes of Dubai and Abu Dhabi might have established themselves as the premier cricket destinations of the UAE in recent years, but Sharjah remains the pioneer in introducing top-quality cricket to the nation.
Originally constructed in 1981 under the patronage of the Bukhatir family, the historic venue is the first dedicated cricket stadium in the UAE. It held its first international matches in 1984 when it played host to the inaugural edition of the Asia Cup involving Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka.
A testament to Sharjah Cricket Stadium’s longevity is the fact that it hosted four games in the 2022 edition of the Asia Cup held in the UAE.
In the time span of nearly four decades between these Asia Cup editions, Sharjah has hosted more international cricket matches than any other stadium in the world. In 2022, it even entered the Guinness Book of World Records for hosting a record 244 One-Day International (ODI) matches at the venue.
Besides the ODIs, Sharjah has also played host to 9 Test matches and 62 T20 Internationals. More recently, it was the setting for The Common Ground initiative undertaken by Mountain Dew. The initiative seeks to celebrate the special cricketing history between the two nations while aiming to bring fans from both sides together.
For this, Mountain Dew specially imported grass turf from both Pakistan and India to be laid out at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. To mark the occasion, a blended cricket game between fans from both countries was held at the historic venue.

On the road to carving its own unique identity in the cricket world, one man has been a constant for the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. He is Mohmmad Jameel, the chief curator of the iconic ground.
Born in Sahiwal (Pakistan), Jameel came to the UAE in 1977 to work as a foreman for Abdul Rahman Bukhatir’s property company. In 1982, he joined the staff at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium as an assistant to the then-chief curator Mohammad Basheer.
“I didn’t know much about preparing wickets when I joined,” Jameel told us in his crisp Urdu. “I had a passion for the sport and a desire to learn.
“Since the first day, I have taken care of it (the pitch) and not bothered about working 12 or 14 hours a day. It’s really hard work but I love it.”
This passion has seen him establish his name among the top pitch curators in the region along with a rich CV with four decades of experience under his belt.
The art of preparing cricket pitches has become heavily modernised in recent years with the advent of new technologies and machinery. Despite these new changes, Jameel remains steadfast with his own, unique approach.
“I work with my experience, not modern technology and the high-end machinery,” he continued.
“I use very traditional types of work and with my experience, it results in the wickets we have.”
Amid the record number of matches held over the years in Sharjah, it is the India vs Pakistan encounters which hold a special place. Matches between the two arch-rivals and neighbours at Sharjah were common occurrences during the 1980s and 1990s, with several epic encounters taking place.
During this distinguished tenure, Jameel has enjoyed a front-row seat to these iconic battles between the two nations.
“Games between Pakistan and India have been some of my favourite moments in this job,” he stated.
“There is a huge expatriate population from the two countries here in the UAE and Sharjah. As such, the atmosphere in the stadium when these two teams play is just something else and cannot be rivalled.”
“Two of my favourite matches here happened in Pakistan-India matches,” he continued.

“The 1984 Asia Cup final was a great match, where India beat Pakistan. However, my personal favourite will always be 1986 when Javed Miandad hit that six off the last ball to win it for Pakistan.”
With the Pakistan-India games being so close to Jameel’s heart, it was fitting that he was there to witness The Common Ground initiative undertaken by Mountain Dew on the 23rd of October.
“It is an excellent initiative to bring grass turf from Pakistan and India over here,” said Jameel.
“We have previously imported clay from Pakistan to prepare the Sharjah pitch, so it is nice to see grass from both countries here now.
“I think Sharjah Cricket Stadium is the perfect venue for this initiative given the past history of iconic matches between the two countries.”
The Common Ground is the latest feather to adorn Sharjah Cricket Stadium’s stellar legacy, and Jameel remains its steadfast gatekeeper amidst the changing times.
“When I started I didn’t think I’d be part of this ground’s history. I am proud of what I have achieved here and I promise to keep going on,” he concluded.

Turkey’s Halil Amir ready to enhance title credentials at ONE Fight Night 16

Turkey’s blossoming combat sports scene could have a superstar emerging.
29-year-old Halil Amir will return to the ONE arena at ONE Fight Night 16 on November 4, ready to once again put his unbeaten record on the line, as he continues to climb the ladder towards a title shot.
An MMA professional since 2016, his career rocketed from 2019 onwards and he now holds an impressive 9-0 record. Having seen off all challenges before him in Europe and the Middle East, Amir made his ONE debut a little over a year ago with an impressive second-round stoppage of Timofey Nastyukhin.
He followed that up with a decision win over Maurice Abevi, and now is looking to further enhance his position in the ONE lightweight MMA class with a win over Pakistan’s Ahmed Mujtaba.
“This is the next step to the fight for the belt,” says Amir. “If you compare Ahmed with my last two opponents, they are completely different. I wouldn’t say Ahmed is strong in one certain aspect, but he knows a little bit of everything. He will try to brawl with me. We will be ready for anything, and yes, it will definitely be a good fight. I advise you not to blink.
“As always, my plan is to go out there and put in a beautiful and spectacular fight.”
Amir, who has won eight of his nine MMA bouts by stoppage, has big plans for the coming years – but is also willing to be patient in order to get what he wants.
“I want to become the undefeated ONE Lightweight MMA World Champion, and then drop down to featherweight, fight for that belt, and become a double champion.”
So, does a win at ONE Fight Night 16 get him a title shot?
“I don’t know what plans ONE has for the lightweight division,” Amir said. “I need to get past Ahmed first and then we’ll see. I’m always ready.”
Aside from his challenges in the ring, Amir is set to take on possibly his biggest challenge to date soon – that of fatherhood – it’s a daunting one, but one what his motivating his career too.
“We are expecting and I cannot wait for this day,” he explained. “Family life has naturally had a positive impact. My wife supports me no matter the circumstances. The fact that we will soon be parents is a big responsibility, and it motivates me more to win and make money. I advise everyone to start a family.”

Five reasons to watch ONE Fight Night 16: Haggerty vs. Andrade

We are a little over a week away from one of the most explosive events of the combat sports calendar, here are five reasons why you need to watch ONE Fight Night 16: Haggerty vs. Andrade.
The crowning of a two sport champion
Champion vs Champion is always a spectacle but when we know one of the combatants will walk away a two sport king, things hot up even more. ONE bantamweight Muay Thai champion Jonathan Haggerty will take on ONE bantamweight MMA champion Fabricio Andrade with the divisional kickboxing title on the line. These are two explosive strikers who have made careers out of highlight-reel performances, and this should be no exception.
Twin champions?
Tye Ruotolo’s brother Kade is already a ONE champion in the lightweight submission grappling division. Now the 19-year-old prodigy has the opportunity to join his twin as he attempts to claim the inaugural welterweight submission grappling title. He will go into the bout with Magomed Abdulkadirov as a strong favourite but the Russian debutant cannot be underestimated, and has serious pedigree of his own heading into the Lumpinee Boxing Stadium clash
Another teenage sensation
Ruotolo is not the only teenager on the card in Bangkok, Thailand’s own Supergirl Anna Jaroonsak will be in action when she takes on Spain’s Cristina Morales in the atomweight kickboxing division. Supergirl is an explosive striker known for making entertaining fights and will be looking to establish herself as a real contender on a number of fronts. With her only defeat in ONE coming at the hands of three sport world champion Stamp Fairtex, it is only a matter of time before she is holding gold of her own.
Revenge a dish best served cold
Liam Nolan will be going into ONE Fight Night 16 with one thing on his mind – revenge. The Brit meets Sinsamut Klinmee knowing the last time they met, he ended the night laid out on  the canvas thanks to a stunning KO from the Thai fighter. This is an intriguing lightweight Muay Thai encounter with both men thinking a win can help them take a tilt at the title. Klinmee was super close the title glory in the past losing by split decision to Regian “The Immortal” Eersel the current lightweight kickboxing and Muay Thai king. There is a lot on this one for both men.
One for the Middle East fans
He may hail from Turkey, but having competed extensively in the Middle East, Hilal Amir has a significant following in the region. Undefeated in ONE, the 27-year-old will take on Pakistan’s Ahmed Mujtaba in the lightweight MMA division knowing a win will further enhance his impressive credentials. Mujtaba is well experienced in ONE, with three wins from his six outings – and will be looking to bounce back from his last outing, a first round submission defeat to Sage Northcutt.
