ONE 166: Qatar ‘exceeded all expectations’ says Group President, next event already in the works

With the dust now settled in the wake of ONE Championship’s return to the Middle East, the company’s execs have an overwhelmingly positive reaction to the event – and are already anticipating an even bigger return.
ONE 166: Qatar played out to a packed house at the Lusail Sports Arena at the start of this month, and featured a night of thrilling competition – including three world title fights, and a main event which saw history being made as Russia’s Anatoly Malykhin became the first MMA fighter globally to hold three world titles  concurrently at different weights.
Martial arts in the region  are showing a huge boom currently with lots of the world’s key players looking for their place in the market, and ONE certainly made a huge impact in Qatar.
“It was great, I think it exceeded all expectations,” said Hua Fung Teh, Group President at ONE Championship.
“The atmosphere was amazing. It’s a big stadium. It’s a 10,000 seater. It was near capacity with a lot of VIPs in attendance.
“Despite competing with great events happening in Qatar that same evening, we had great attendance, great atmosphere, and great feedback”.
Preceded by ONE’s first ever open workout featuring eight of the organisation’s top martial artists, the historic event gave fans and partners alike a unique experience.
“I think our partners are all very happy, we had top leadership in attendance and all the feedback was positive,” said Mr. Teh.
“This was our first major event in the Middle East. It’s our debut in Qatar.
“But interestingly, it was actually a first for us in terms of the event week activities. We did our first ever open workout on a beach, and I give Qatar Tourism credit –  that was an idea put together in partnership with them. And it went very, very well. So I think there was a certain spirit of innovation, and creativity.
“And we want to apply that same spirit to the next event and see what else we can do.”
And that is the line local fight fans will have been wanting to hear – ‘the next event’. It is something Mr. Teh is already planning along with the wider ONE team and how the experience can be made even better for fans.
“Now we’re just thinking about the next one and what else we can do to further enhance the experience,” he said.
“This is  going to be hopefully a recurring thing for us, this is a long-term partnership that we have with Qatar.. We want to figure out when and how the next one should look like.
“Watch this space.”

Watch: Big ONE Championship wins for Lebanese brothers, Moroccan delivers big upset

There were some huge wins for Middle East fighters on another big night of action in ONE Championship.
At ONE Friday Fights 61 Lebanese brothers Ramadan and Abdallah Ondash secured impressive wins to further enhance their Muay Thai credentials.
Ramadan was first in the ring and flew out of the traps, dropping his opponent
Pichitchai PK Saenchai twice in the opening minute, before going on to pick up a well-deserved unanimous decision win.
At just 17 years of age and with two wins already under his belt in ONE Championship, the future is looking bright for the Tiger Muay Thai prospect.

Brother Abdallah was equally impressive. His battle with Suesat Manop Gym was a wild affair with both men throwing everything they had at each other, before Ondash was given the unanimous decision win.
That moves the 22-year-old to 4-0 in ONE Championship and a real threat in the strawweight Muay Thai division.

Later in the night at ONE Fight Night 22 Morocco’s Zakaria El Jamari secured arguably the biggest win of his career when outlasting Thongpoon PK Saenchai in the strawweight MMA class. Thongpoon had a fearsome record going into the contest but El Jamari refused to be denied with a combination of guys and power-striking giving him his first ONE Championship victory.

It was not all good news for the region however, in ONE Fight Night 22 co-main event, Turkey’s Halil Amir suffered a second-round KO at the hands of Akbar Abdullaev. Both men carried unblemished records into the bout, but a booming left hook form the Kyrgyz fighter ended this one early.

ONE Fight Night 22: Turkey’s Hilal Amir has sights set on ONE Championship Gold

Riding the back of a perfect record in ONE Championship, Turkey’s Hilal Amir is a man on a mission.
3-0 in the world’s biggest martial arts organisation and 10-0 as a professional overall, the 29-year-old finds himself in the co-main event slot at  ONE Fight Night 22: Sundell vs. Diachkova, taking place in the early hours of May 4 for fight fans in the Middle East.
A stunning KO of Timofey Nastyuhin on debut was followed up by a decision win against Maurice Abevi, before an impressive dismantling of Ahmed Mujtaba last time out.
Those three fights were all in the MMA lightweight division but his next encounter with Akbar Abdullaev from Kyrgyzstan will be at his preferred featherweight.
“Before ONE, I always competed in this weight class,” said Amir. “I’m not a big lightweight, and I think in this weight class, I’ll be faster and stronger.”
Back in a more comfortable division and with a strong record behind him, Amir is looking to initiate a rapid rise in the rankings: “After my victory, I want to fight for the belt or with someone from the top 5 rankings. I don’t like predicting fights. My goal is to finish him. If I cannot succeed, I’ll do everything in my power to make the referee raise my hand.”
Ahead of the contest Amir has had the opportunity to train with Khabib Nurmagomedov and his team, an experience the Turkish fighter says has readied him even more for his upcoming fight.
“For me, it was a very good experience. He has hard training at his school. Khabib always has strict discipline during training. Naturally, the work was focused on wrestling and grappling, and as a person, he is a very simple person. He is often immersed in training and helps his team and, of course, he was also pushing me during the training sessions.”
Amir has huge respect for Abdullaev as a fighter, but becoming a father has also given him a new outlook on life and one which has made him even more laser-focussed in his MMA ambitions.
“My opponent Akbar is a good fighter,” he said. “He has explosive kicks, and he’s a classic kickboxer. His strong point is obvious – his striking technique. I don’t have a special plan. I will enter the ring and move forward, as always.
“I have always been motivated in my life and career, and after having children, this makes me more motivated.
“Becoming a champion is a natural legacy. When my children grow up, I want them to be proud of me and look to me as an example. And when I become a champion, I will earn more money and it will be easier for my family.”
The next step on that legacy is almost upon us.
ONE Fight Night 22: Sundell vs. Diachkova takes place Saturday May 4 at 4am GST at the Lumpinee Boxing Stadium, Bangkok. This is an event not to be missed so mark your calendars, tune in to the fight on BeIN Sports, download the ONE Super App, and go to watch.onefc.com now!

From Morocco to Abu Dhabi: Zakaria El Jamari’s incredible martial arts journey

Behind many a fighter there is a story of hardship. A childhood struggle, a battle against the odds. That may be, but few would stack up to the one endured by Zakaria El Jamari.
Born into a tough neighbourhood of Morocco’s capital Rabat, he found himself fighting from a young age. Surrounded by circles of his contemporaries this was no playground scrap, this was his proving ground – and the first step on his career path.
Spotted by a local boxing coach, he moved from the dusty streets to the gym and ring where he would hone his innate abilities. Surrounded by other quality fighters, he improved and by his mid-teens would be making his competitive debut.
“I had my first fight at 15,” explains El Jamari. “I won that fight via knockout.”
A stellar start, but one that would not immediately send him stardom. Instead El Jamari would toil away, mixing training with school work and fulfilling an education that was always so important to him – he now holds a degree in Arabic literature.
“Morocco has a lot of great talent,” he said. “Fighting is in our blood. People love kickboxing, Muay Thai, and all combat sports. But it is not easy to make it. I had to balance my time and energy between work and training. I would go running in the morning then go to school. Then I’d go to work. To become a professional fighter, one has to face difficulties. But it is in these difficult conditions, and not in a life of leisure, that a champion is born. A fighter needs to wait for the right timing and seize that opportunity.”
That opportunity, El Jamari decided, would not be in his homeland. Soon after the death of his father in 2015, an event he describes as the biggest difficulty he had endured, a then 26-year-old El Jamari would travel to the UAE in search of a break. Splitting his time between personal training to get by, and training to find the fights that would help propel his career.
“I always had my eye on becoming a professional fighter,” he said. “I always said to myself: I can be a coach, but I am a champion, not just a coach. I have the mentality of a champion.
Once I got my chance in Dubai, I won my fights. I eventually became a professional fighter and improved my living conditions. I knew I was on the right track.”
As the wins clocked up, so did his notoriety – but then disaster.
“I lost a fight for the WMC belt after I had prepared well, trained well, and was very confident. When I lost that fight, I chose to end my career. I was in a mental crisis.”
It was at this point El Jamari would turn to his brother, Mehdi. The two had grown up together and lived the fight game as youngsters before Mehdi would move to Spain.
“When I stopped fighting in 2020, Mehdi was the one who motivated me to continue in my career,” said Al Jamari. “He inspired me and told me that I was capable of achieving more. I worried that I wouldn’t be able to find myself again, but he pushed me on. We always motivated each other.”
It was that motivation that got him back into the ring and on the right side of a four-fight win streak that was enough to be spotted by ONE Championship.
Never one to take the easy route, El Jamari’s debut in March this year did not go to plan. A second round knockout defeat to Russia’s Ali Saldoev was a tough welcome to the world’s biggest martial arts organisation – albeit on short notice. But this is a man who has dealt with adversity, and met it head on, and will do so again this week at ONE Fight Night 22.
His opponent in the strawweight Muay Thai division is tough local competitor Thongpoon who will have the home crowd on his side at the Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.
Residing now in Abu Dhabi, and training out of the King Wolf Gym in Ras Al Khaimah El Jamari is a fighter born out of Morocco but with deep connections to the UAE, and while he knows his task on Saturday morning Middle East time will be a tough on – he is seeing it as his next step on the road to a world title.
“Thongpoon is a very good fighter. He has powerful hands and feet,” he said. “But he also has weak points. I think he can be reckless at times and I will look to take advantage of that.
“My game plan is to continuously press him and wait for the opening. Whenever he feels the pressure, he will attack recklessly, and I’ll be waiting to capitalize on that.
“My feeling is that I will beat him. I believe it will be a second-round knockout.”
ONE Fight Night 22 comes live from the famed Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand on Saturday May 4 at 4am GST. For more information on watching this blockbuster event see watch.onefc.com

French-Algerian Anissa Meksen gets chance to be first to claim new ONE Championship gold

One of combat sport’s most exciting and enigmatic strikers is set to vie for ONE Championship title glory – and be the first fighter to hold a new title for the organisation.
French-Algerian Anissa Meksen needs little introduction to fight fans. At 36, her record speaks for itself – it is a catalogue of world titles across both kickboxing and Muay Thai. Since 2017 she has never been outside of the top-two female pound-for-pound kickboxers on the planet.
In 2021 she made her way to ONE Championship – looking to cement her legacy with a world title in the globe’s biggest martial arts organisation. Three impressive wins saw her on the brink of this achievement, but Phetjeeja would ultimately deny her the ONE Interim Women’s Atomweight Kickboxing World Title last December.
Despite that disappointment, there is now another opportunity. In June, at ONE Fight Night 23, the ONE Women’s Strawweight Kickboxing World Champion will be crowned for the first time with Meksen and Filipino-American Jackie Buntan set to square off.
At 26, Buntan represents the younger generation of fighters in ONE Championship, but has already built herself an impressive 6-1 record with the organisation. The only blot on her report card coming at the hands of teenage sensation Smilla Sundell, no shame there.
Buntan has often been preceded by a lot of hype throughout her career, but has consistently been able to back it up – and now finds herself one step away from fulfilling all the excitement  that has gone before her.
Twenty-six pounds of world title are on the line in a classic tale of the experienced legend taking on the exciting youngster ready to take over the mantle.
We know from their styles this has the potential to be an instant classic with Meksen hoping to fill her trophy cabinet with a strap that has thus far eluded her.
ONE Fight Night 23 will take place in the early hours of June 6 in the Middle East, coming live from the Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.

Adrian Lee’s ONE Championship debut confirmed as he looks to further family legacy

Lee is not just a name in ONE Championship, it is a dynasty and there will soon be another fighter joining the ranks of his illustrious siblings.
Adrian Lee, the younger brother of Christian, Angela, and the late Victoria, has penned a contract that will see him debut at ONE 167: Stamp vs. Zamboanga on June 7.
At just 18-years-of-age he not only carries the expectation of the family name but for some time now has been one of the hottest young fight properties fans have been eager to see ascend to the professional ranks.
The American-Singaporean has been primarily training out of Hawaii with brother Christian, building a reputation as a well-rounded MMA athlete despite his tender years.
To date he has built an impressive base, becoming a decorated amateur champion in MMA, kickboxing, and pankration, as well as a state wrestling champion in Hawaii.
But, on June 7 he will make the biggest step up of his short career when he takes to the cage against Italian newcomer Antonio Mammarella at the Impact Arena in Bangkok. The pair will compete in ONE’s lightweight MMA class – the division currently ruled by Adrian’s two-weight world champion brother.
It has been a tumultuous last 18 months for the Lee family. Following the passing of Victoria at just 18, sister Angela decided to call time on her MMA career, relinquishing the ONE atomweight MMA world title in the process.
Fans will be happy to welcome this new chapter of the Lee legacy, and Adrian will immediately find himself on a star-studded card – one befitting both his family name, and his ever-popular sisters.
